Hey all,

Looking for some advice from those that have come before me. I'm finally getting around to submitting my CCW Pistol Permit application (long story short: I thought I needed to wait until I had three year residence in my county, but I will actually just need 4 references who have known me as I've lived here and 3 references of 3+ years from my last county of residence. Should've just applied there before I moved...). Anyways, should I purchase the weapon before submitting my application so that when I receive the permit it will have the serial already on the permit or should I submit then purchase the weapon after I get the permit and have it added to the permit.

Sig 2022SP for your time.

New York is really weird about that stuff. I would say purchase afterward - that way, there won't be any question or suspicion of you maybe carrying it illegally before receiving the permit or in the event that the permit is denied. One less reason for them to challenge or hold up your application.

IMO if you purchase and register the gun for home ownership it should be fairly simple to have the serial put on the CCW Permit. And if the permit app gets denied you can still keep the weapon at home.

Anyone at a gun shop should be able to offer advice or suggestions regarding this.

Usually the dealer or local PD hold the weapon for you until the permit is finished so there is no question regarding illegal carry, but I will have to ask the dealer for specifics. Thanks for weighing in!

I'll ask next time I'm by the shop (or even any decent sporting goods store with a gun counter). The issue I could see there would be you still need a permit for possession on property (which takes just as long to get as the concealed carry since it's on the same form).

I had a permit in Pennsylvania, but never bothered to get one in New York and never moved any of my guns into the state. Probably should have, but I read enough to see what a hassle it was, and just decided not to bother. I'm moving back to PA in about a month anyway.

Have to admit I don't know all the finer details, but I always try to play as safe as possible on those sorts of things.

I would've thought the home permit would need to come before the CCW, I would try to do that since it would be easier to get.

What pistol were you thinking of getting?

You should get one of these bad boys! 8 shots of .357 mag! If 8 shots with a sledgehammer dosen't get the job done then you're probobly in over your head.

It depends on the county I believe. Where I live in Washington county you can get your permit without owning a handgun (of course you could still order one and have it held). In the next county over Saratoga my understanding is you actually HAVE to have a firearm on hold to get your permit...

Goodness thats a massive hassle. In my state the process to carry is:

1 Buy gun

2 Carry gun

I can think of a few reasons why that gun would suck. First it would ruin your wrists. Next the barrel is short so it's not that accurate which leads to the final problem of being proficient with a gun that isn't fun too shoot or accurate.

That would definitely stop someone. Have you priced .357 ammo lately?

Hadn't heard of it being a requirement to have a gun on order anywhere before. In the Monroe County paperwork it does not have any language requiring the purchase of a pistol.

Welcome to the liberal overreaction that is NYS.

Actually I'm really drawn to that sig which is available chambered in 9mm or .40. Nice accessory rail up front, decently long barrel for accuracy at ~4.5", and not terribly heavy with a bunch of plastic in the construction.

More stopping power, less chance over penetration, slightly more expensive ammo.
